Fused Glass Plate Workshop

In conjunction with the Shades of White exhibit at Del Ray Artisans gallery, glass artist Betsy Mead will offer a 2-part fused glass plate workshop using two shades of white to create an 8" x 8" plate. When these two white glasses are fired in the kiln, a chemical reaction occurs that will show our artists that white isn't "just white"!

All materials are supplied by instructor. No previous experience with glass fusing is necessary. All glass pieces will be pre-cut.

What topics/skills will the instruction cover?

• brief discussion of glass fusing/warm glass
• how different types of glass interact to create color
• basic design options

What can students expect to learn or gain from participation?

• better appreciation of the "warm glass" fusing process
• understanding of how sulphur and lead-based glasses chemically interact when fused
• how glass "bends" and shapes during the fusing process

What types of activities will occur during the session (e.g., lecture, demonstration, hands-on, etc.)

• brief slide presentation on glass fusing, chemical interactions, and basic design elements
• instructor will demonstrate how to layer and "decorate" glass
• students will use precut glass 8" x 8" squares and other precut glass pieces to create their own unique plate designs
• students will assemble plates during first session of class
• instructor will take student plates home to kiln fire
• instructor returns on second day of class with finished pieces
• Students will discuss their reactions and share their thoughts about the process
