WORKSHOP Improv for Creativity

Grown-Ups Art Camp Workshop: "Improv for Creativity" (Introductory / All levels)
Date: Wednesday, July 1 from 6-8pm
Instructor: Keely Kirk
Workshop Fee: $35 members / $45 non-members
Class size: 5-15 participants

We live in an unscripted world. What is improv? How can improv help you as an artist? This workshop will answer these questions and more! If you are a musician, painter, dancer, singer, graphic designer, actor, writer, interior designer, landscape architect, curator, or any other type of artist then this workshop is for you! It will provide you with guided exploration in the elements of improvisation for creative development. It emphasizes the exploration of artistic impulses through spur-of-the-moment problem solving/creative risk-taking in a supportive learning environment. This workshop is designed to evoke your creative individuality and sense of freedom. Come and open your mind and allow for creative fusion! No experience required.

What we will do in workshop: We will play a variety of improv games that will unleash your imagination, confidence, and spontaneity. You will be amazed as you create stories and scenes on the spot. You will enjoy a supportive environment that promotes cooperation and positive thinking. You will discover how improvisation can be used in your artistic endeavors and life. We will explore exercises that will help you build confidence, think on your feet, communicate effectively, and connect with a variety of people in a variety of settings. You will also learn skills to enhance awareness, rapport, body language, voice, storytelling, presence, and the ability to pick yourself up quickly from failure. Your skills will be developed with direct feedback from a supportive instructor. This is a great introduction for beginners and those that have done improv before.

Meet the Instructor: Keely Kirk - Keely Kirk stepped into the improv abyss at a tender age and found a place to be herself. She began training with Mental Floss, a Miami-based improv/sketch troupe which performed at the Coconut Grove Playhouse until Hurricane Andrew blew it all away. She went on to be a principle performer for over ten years with Laughing Gas Comedy Improv - Miami's longest running improv theatre company.

She decided that Miami was just too warm and balmy and moved to Chicago (the improv epicenter), where she was involved and trained with IO (formally Improv Olympics) and Second City (you might have seen a few of the alumni on Saturday Night Live). While in Chicago Keely decided to come to Washington D.C. to become the presidential jester; however, due to government cut backs she was furloughed. Currently, Keely teaches three levels of improv at The Little Theatre of Alexandria and several other class/workshops at other theaters in the DC Metro area. In addition she performs improv and conducts team-building workshops using the principles of improv to individuals and corporations.
